\nCovid-19 was a public health emergency. Economic activity was suspended due to the necessary confinement measures taken almost everywhere in the world. The targeted policies of major central banks to address this economic crisis shared many common features but differed in details and labels. They were intended to work through several distinct channels: helping the real economy through lower risk\u2011free interest rates; helping banks supply liquidity to their clients, especially SMEs; supporting capital markets; keeping dollar financing available; and in the euro area, maintaining the single transmission mechanism. Together, and combined with extraordinary government emergency responses, the central banks\u2019 measures cushioned the economic crisis by short circuiting amplification mechanisms.<\/p>\n
