| <\/a><\/td>\n | \u00a0Professor Ishihara ‘s comment: Every humanities researcher has a thesis that becomes the starting point of their own research. In my case, it was a thesis titled “Sorekara as an Anti-Family Novel” (1987), which I read as not only a story of an illicit love affair with a married woman, but also a story of conflict with one’s family. What made me realize this was the name of the protagonist, Daisuke. Under prewar civil law, the eldest son essentially inherited everything, so the second son (Daisuke) was a spare in case the eldest son had an accident. After that, I realized that the market of Asahi Shimbun, where Soseki became an exclusive writer, was the middle class in Tokyo’s Yamanote area, which was the time of inheritance from the first generation to the second generation of the Meiji Restoration. As an exclusive writer for Asahi Shimbun, Soseki faithfully wrote his novels for the male intellectuals in Yamanote. Having witnessed the end of modernity while studying in England, Soseki was one of the first to see signs of its coming to Japan, and continued to write in his novels about the meaning of evolution and devolution in society, the meaning behind why women appear mysterious to men, the future of capitalism, and the limitations of the first-person subject “I.” Therefore, to discuss Soseki is to discuss modern Japan. \nThis is my acceptance speech after finding myself lost in an unknown world.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n \uff1cResearch Contents\uff1e<\/p>\n |
