{"id":149,"date":"2023-06-15T00:18:02","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T15:18:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/qatarchair\/?p=149"},"modified":"2023-07-28T00:19:52","modified_gmt":"2023-07-27T15:19:52","slug":"majliswaseda-saudi-foreign-policy-in-a-changing-world-regional-and-international-implications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/inst\/qatarchair\/news-en\/149","title":{"rendered":"Majlis@Waseda:\u00a0 Saudi Foreign Policy in a Changing World; regional and international implications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dr. Asaad Alshamlan<\/p>\n<p>Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for European Studies at Prince Saud Al Faisal Institute for Diplomatic Studies in Riyadh<\/p>\n<p>15\/06\/2023 5:30 pm<\/p>\n<p>Waseda University, Building 14 Room 402<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia\u00a0(KSA)\u00a0is making a significant shift in its foreign policy,\u00a0reorienting\u00a0from\u00a0confrontational to\u00a0subtle\u00a0diplomacy\u00a0while\u00a0trying\u00a0to\u00a0de-escalate regional tensions\u00a0and create\u00a0a\u00a0balance between\u00a0the\u00a0great powers\u00a0while\u00a0transforming its own economy.\u00a0Saudi leadershipunderstands\u00a0that\u00a0persistent\u00a0regional conflicts or\u00a0taking sides with any major power can negatively impact its social and economic transformation programme and is, therefore,\u00a0pursuing more balanced foreign policies.\u00a0The KSA\u2019s new foreign policies have regional and international implications.\u00a0By making domestic politics\u00a0\u2013\u00a0namely,\u00a0socialand economic transformations\u00a0\u2013\u00a0as a\u00a0priority of\u00a0its foreign policies, the KSA is sending a message to its rivals in the region that it does not seek hostilities with them\u00a0but rather\u00a0coexistence\u00a0and\u00a0cooperation. It is only when there is peace, security, and stability in the region that the KSA and other neighbouring countries can achieve prosperity.\u00a0Riyadh is seeking to maintain good relations with all major powers based on mutual respect and common interests.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0how\u00a0should we\u00a0read\u00a0the new Saudi\u00a0foreign policy\u00a0orientation?\u00a0What are the dimensions of the\u00a0Chinese brokered\u00a0Saudi-Iranian\u00a0agreement on the security and stability of the region?\u00a0How do we read developments in\u00a0Saudi-American\u00a0relations in light of\u00a0its\u00a0recent\u00a0relations with China and Russia?\u00a0What is the position of the\u00a0KSA and other\u00a0Gulf states on the Russian-Ukrainian war?\u00a0What implications,\u00a0if any,\u00a0are there for\u00a0Japan and\u00a0Asia?\u00a0These and other\u00a0questions will be discussed by\u00a0Dr. Asaad Alshamlan\u00a0at\u00a0Majlis@Waseda\u00a0on\u00a02023\/6\/15.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Asaad Alshamlan is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for European Studies at Prince Saud Al Faisal Institute for Diplomatic Studies in Riyadh. He worked (among other things) as a political consultant for the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) from 2012-2014. His teaching, research and publications relate to Gulf security,\u00a0Saudi-Americanrelations, Saudi-British relations, GCC-EU relations, Saudi-Russian relations, Saudi-Chinese relations, Political Islam, Foreign Policy Analysis, contemporary theories of international politics, The Concept of The Political, and Post-Structuralist approaches in political analysis.
