The institute was created to undertake comprehensive analysis of matters related to American, Japanese and Asian politics, economies, culture and history in order to make recommendations for strategic policy formation. As a research center, the Institute of Japan-US Studies concentrates on issues between the US and Japan, on comparative US-Japan studies, and on global issues for which joint US-Japan efforts could contribute in finding solutions. As such it has assembled researchers from a wide range of study areas. Its research is objective, neutral and comprehensive, and seeks to contribute to research on the US-Japan partnership and policymaking.
