Historical Reconciliation and Peaceful Coexistence in East Asia: Past and Present
Institute of Asian Studies (IAS) functions as an engine which drives four different projects of Asian Research Unit, conducting research for peace and development in Asia. Integrated into ORIS in 2015, we are working together with them in promoting the projects 3 and 4 mentioned below.
- Research Projects
Under the theme of “Historical Reconciliation and Peaceful Coexistence in East Asia”, IAS engages in two different types of research projects: A. Projects oriented for solving concrete issues (Issue-oriented Research Projects), and B. Projects oriented for structural analysis (Analysis-oriented Research Projects). The issue-oriented research projects will focus on studying common features of a few selected concrete issues of importance closely related to problems of Historical Reconciliation and Peaceful Coexistence in Asia. These studies will be combined with analysis-oriented research projects which analyze the causes of such problems historically, to present methods and mechanisms for solving them in concrete terms. As a whole, we aim at proposing an Asian model for historical reconciliation and peaceful coexistence in a manner which is comprehensive, inter-disciplinary, systematic, and geared to producing concrete policy proposals.
- Education Projects
We support young researchers in the field of Asian Studies at Waseda University as well as those at other institutions. Also, we introduce our research achievements by providing courses at the Global Education Center to the students at Waseda University.
- Networking Projects
We aim to promote a close cooperation between Asian Research Unit and other domestic and foreign research institutes through joint research efforts, and as well to support the development of a network for academic exchange among researchers and graduate students (Research Network Building). The results of these multiple research activities will be made available to the public through Seminars and various symposiums which we will organize and sponsor by inviting prominent researchers from home and abroad. Media reports and interviews about our activities will be another conduit through which we hope to share the results of our academic research with the public.
- Publication Projects
We plan, edit and publish book series, journals and project reports.
