【Abstract】
This joint workshop, held by Waseda University and Aoyama Gakuin University, addresses Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16: Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies. The workshop also discusses Goal 16 and its relation with other goals from the perspectives of Africa and Asia.
The first session explores institutions formation in post-conflict societies from African perspectives, discussing elections in Liberia. Presentation 1 explains how the electoral division of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) worked with the newly established National Election Commission (NEC), focusing on electoral procedures and NEC officials training for the 2003 Liberian elections. Presentation 2 analyzes sociopolitical landscape in the run-up to the 2011 Liberian elections through the lens of voters. Presentation 3 examines how the past violent experiences affected voting behavior in the 2017 Liberian elections.
The second session sheds light on science and digital technologies, urban heritage, and the environmental issues. Presentation 1 introduces the cases of Block-Chain as a part of the Disruptive Technologies which ensures transparency to make good governance in the fragile state. Presentation 2 illustrates how the cultural heritage is situated in the SDGs in terms of Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable, introducing some common issues of urban heritage conservation in Asian cities. Presentation 3 shows how the technology contributes to the SDGs, especially Goal 11 and Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development, and how the technology can be linked to SDGs Goal 16 in order to improve the living environment and the natural ecosystem.
