Prof. Nishino Kaoru is a renowned opera singer and a scholar/researcher in the field of Italian traditional as well as contemporary opera study. Prof. Nishino made a presentation included history of opera in Italy linking with Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and Tosca. Puccini’s work is further analyzed from semiotics which includes symbolic meanings in particular musical rhythm, singers’ voice production levels, gestures, and the overall plot of the opera. Prof. Nishino’s scholarly analysis is followed by her singing each significant segment of the piece that has been performed since 400 years ago in Italy. In addition, another renowned opera singer and researcher, Prof. Yabunishi introduced the basics of voice training in connection with the background context of opera pieces. Students have participated in the interactive way by actually engaging in one segment of the plot in the opera. This seminar has given students and participants a rare opportunity to learn about the theory and practice of opera.
