In order to realize such energy generation and energy-saving, it is absolutely crucial to improve the characteristics of materials themselves, and to realize new devices through the generation of new materials not seen up to now. Based on the results of research carried out to date, we will attempt a rational and hands-on approach towards reducing the environmental burden primarily from semiconductors and insulating materials, through the following means.

1. Creation of efficient solar cells using semiconductor nanostructure

This study aims to raise the efficiency of solar cells, which have aroused considerable anticipations as non-oil-dependent, low-carbon electric power sources and as dispersed power sources forming a foundation for smartgrids. To do this, it is necessary not only to increase the efficiency of such cells through improving the characteristics of individual materials, but also to make efficient use of a wide range of solar light spectra through incorporating such materials in a composite manner. We are embarking on the improvement of absorption efficiency using excitons, and are undertaking research into new solar cell structures incorporating quantum nanostructures such as quantum wells and superlattices, as well as evident basic characteristics. This study aims further to clarify exciton effects on a variety of materials and to incorporate such materials in a composite manner, thus realizing new solar cells which use the spectra of solar light without waste.

2. Creation of new insulating materials using electric power/electrical/electronic devices through high-molecular (polymer)/inorganic nanocomposites

In terms of insulation methods in various types of devices which have the role of providing a stable supply of electric power such as power cables, transformers and switchgears, it is desirable to convert from the oil- and gas-based methods which are the methods primarily used at present, to eco-friendly solid insulator methods. As a result, we have paid attention to close-packed nanoparticle (nanocomposite (NC)) insulation materials. This study will investigate the possibilities for supporting various kinds of electric power devices, from the creation of materials to evaluation of the dielectric properties. It further aims to elucidate the mechanisms for improving electric properties through a shift towards nanocomposites.

Researchers

Yoshimichi OHKI (Professor, Faculty of Science and Engineering)
Masakazu KOBAYASHI (Professor, Faculty of Science and Engineering)
Takayuki SOTA (Professor, Faculty of Science and Engineering)
Kyozaburo TAKEDA (Professor, Faculty of Science and Engineering)
Atsushi KAWAHARAZUKA (Associate professor, Waseda Institute for Advanced Study)
Daiji HASEGAWA (Visiting Lecture(full-time), Waseda Institute for Advanced Study)
Naoshi HIRAI (Visiting Lecture(full-time), Research Institute for Science and Engineering)
Jiro NISHINAGA (Assistant professor, Waseda Institute for Advanced Study)

Adjunct Researcher

Li Jianying (Professor,Xifan Jiaotong University)
Kennosuke SAWA (Researcher,SAMSUNG Yokohama Research Institute Co.,Ltd)

Concluded Laboratory 2013/03/31 Director : Yoshimichi OHKI Professor,Faculty of Science and Engineering Resear […]

[97

post-336","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-other-en
["GET
