Research theme

Joint research of sports science and advanced science and engineering for supporting active aging in our Inevitable future of the super-aged society

Overview of research

In research in our field of focus, “paradigm shifts in a super-aged society,” we build upon previous research outcomes in three research groups – sports sciences, robot engineering, and life sciences – to develop research that fuses cutting-edge science and engineering and sports sciences and is focused on the impending arrival of the super-aged society. We have arrived at the awareness that it is essential to build a society in which ‘the functions enabling people to live healthy and pleasant lives as aging progresses are preserved’ and that the research to support that is a pressing and important issue, so we have decided to propose ‘research fusing cutting-edge science and engineering and sports sciences in order to support active aging.’
For the research led by the S Group the group will launch and work on the ‘WASEDA’s Health Study’ project targeting the Waseda University Alumni. It will determine the impact of lifestyle on the health and physical strength of middle-aged and old men and women in a cross-sectional manner linked to gene polymorphism, sports experience in early life and adulthood, and current health risks and physical fitness indicators (heart-lung strength, muscle strength, etc.). Furthermore, it will collaborate with the R Group to develop new exercise equipment, and use it to evaluate the health effects on elderly people. Moreover, it will develop the measurement system developed by the T Group into research applied to people.
The research led by the R Group will integrate the previous findings in robot engineering, life sciences, and sports sciences to both establish the basic theory for supporting ‘self-medication for active seniors’ and develop the equipment to support this approach in an integrated manner. Specifically, the group will develop training equipment using robot technology, develop training for elderly people based on sports sciences, and scientifically analyze the impact of diet and lifestyle habits on health and training.
For the research led by the T Group, the group will jointly develop with the R Group nanosheets using functional fluorescent probes and conductive polymers and construct a system to monitor biological information. Furthermore, the group will implement the tests to evaluate the functional nanosheets using TWIns both in vitro and in vivo, and jointly with the S Group will verify the results through research on people. Finally, the group will verify the health effects on elderly people through basic and applied research using temporal health sciences and life sciences such as lifestyle-related diseases and cancer prevention.
