Research theme
A new Japanese literature and Japanese culture research created together with the world
Overview of research
By utilizing the diverse research results that Waseda University, and in particular the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, has achieved through long years of research in Japanese literature and alongside it, Japanese culture, as well as by strengthening the linkages with influential research institutions and researchers built up by individual researchers, we aim to conduct research in true international fashion. Furthermore, in accordance with such international development, we aim to explore research methods and subjects corresponding to the new era and reshape research in Japanese literature and culture, regardless of the traditional framework existing in these fields of research. International collaboration is essential in facilitating new developments in research in Japanese literature and culture today.
Global dissemination of information from Waseda University will also doubtlessly prove to be a valuable contribution to the international revitalization of research in Japanese literature and culture. This research holds the potential to create new forms of research pertaining to Japanese literature and culture in collaboration with the international community, through the establishment of strong cooperation networks between Waseda and the world. For such reasons, we have laid out the following two core areas.
Enhancing international collaboration and information dissemination
Research in the fields of Japanese literature and culture at Waseda University holds an established position not only within Japan, but also in the world. Particularly in recent years, Waseda University has gained the trust of top universities and research institutions in the world, such as Columbia University in the United States and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) in France, and is working on developing various academic and educational joint projects. For the future, in order to become “WASEDA for research” in the 21st century, our top priorities are to further enhance our collaborative strengths, and to build up a system for disseminating research information to the world.
Institutionalization of research and new developments
Research in Japanese literature and culture has developed by separate genres and eras. As such, although advancements have been made in research in each respective field, there is a certain weakness to the whole. Therefore, by promoting the respective research and exchange projects, we aim to institutionalize the research system for Japanese literature and culture on a University-wide basis. Through collaborations with the appropriate faculties and research institutions within the University centered around the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences, we believe that this research group will be able to make rapid progress in successfully disseminating information to the world efficiently. With regard to this field of research, our second aim is to act as a representative for all varsities by becoming a point of contact for external communications.
