Modern stylish scenery, the historic Three Towers, the gourmet haven Chinatown, it can only be Yokohama! Recently ranked as the number 1 desirable place to live by a major real-estate website Yokohama is thriving right now, but did you know that it\u2019s also a place where many of “Japan\u2019s firsts” happened?<\/p>\n

Yokohama was the entry point of western trends and influence in Japan. Things we now take for granted like trains, mail, photography, ice cream and even ambulances were first used in Yokohama. Wouldn’t you like to take a walk around this place “where history and modernity meet” with fresh eyes?<\/p>\n

At this event, you can hear a lecture from Waseda University’s own Professor Tien-Shi CHEN, who has a strong connection to Yokohama Chinatown, and learn about things like “relations between the foreigners district, Chinatown and Japan” and “foreign people who played an active part in Yokohama”. After the lecture, you will split into groups and actually visit these historical spots like Chinatown, the Nippon Yusen-Hikawa Maru freight ship and Motomachi Park. After hearing about these places in the lecture, you will definitely enjoy seeing them from a new point of view!<\/p>\n

And that’s not all! For this event we have also received free chocolate cakes from the Yokohama Motomachi restaurant “Mutekiro”, every participant will have a chance to get some cakes!<\/p>\n

Guest Speaker<\/h5>\n

Prof. Tien-Shi CHEN; Faculty of International Research and Education (School of International Liberal Studies)<\/p>\n

Born in Yokohama Chinatown as a citizen of the Republic of China, she became “stateless” under Japanese law due to the breaking of relations between Japan and the Republic of China and the normalization of relations between Japan and the People’s Republic of China. She is now a Japanese citizen and graduate of Tsukuba University College of International Studies. She was an associate professor at the National Museum of Ethnology’s Department of Advanced Studies in Anthropology and became a professor at Waseda University in April 2013. Her speciality is cultural anthropology.<\/p>\n
