Worldwide Rokyoku performer, television personality and actress Keiko Haruno is now coming to Waseda to show off the traditional Japanese storytelling art of “Rokyoku”!<\/p>\n

“Rokyoku” is one of the traditional popular entertainment forms of Japan and has been practiced since the early Meiji Period. In Rokyoku, the singer sings the narrative of a story accompanied by a musician on the Shamisen, a Japanese traditional 3-stringed guitar, who plays a melody alongside them.
\nThe songs are stories, sung making full use of the melody, similar to a “solo opera”!
\nThe performances of both the singer and musician are done without sheet music, similar to a jazz session, and it is this “live” feeling which carries the appeal of Rokyoku.
\nAnd this time, you can feel the charm of this traditional Japanese art form in English!<\/p>\n

Ms. Haruno has performed Rokyoku on TV and radio, in the theater and at music concerts.
\nUsing her strong language skills she has performed in 11 different cities around the world including New York. Her unprecedented attempts to fund further performances in New York using crowd funding have attracted a lot of attention recently in the entertainment world.<\/p>\n

Now at this ICC event we will show a performance in English of the classic Japanese tragic love story; “Ban-cho Sarayashiki” (The Dish Mansion at Ban-cho). This is one of Japan’s three great Japanese\u00a0tragic love stories stories and has been performed as a Kabuki play as well as a Rokyoku.<\/p>\n

This is a really rare chance to feel the traditional storytelling power of Japan, don’t miss out!<\/p>\n

\u25c6Guest Profile\uff1aKeiko Haruno\u25c6<\/h5>\n

Born in Tokyo. Ms. Haruno had her big break on the TV programme “Susunu! Denpa Shounen” and became a celebrity.
\nIn 2003 she became the 2nd disciple of Yuriko Haruno and made her stage debut in 2006. Since then, she has appeared on stage, radio, television and at live concerts, with around 200 live performances per year, mainly in Kansai.
\nBetween 2014 and 2017 she also performed live in 11 different cities around the world.<\/p>\n
