Stress coupled with continued physical and mental challenges can lead to depression, amongst other conditions. The importance of the link between the mind and the body had has been widely shown through research.

When mental health issues become too much, it can even lead to suicide: since the late 1990s, the suicide rate in Japan has risen rapidly and become one of Japan’s biggest social problems. In 2019, the suicide rate returned to the level seen in the past, but this trend did not last long due to the global coronavirus pandemic beginning in 2020. The pandemic has had a negative impact on people’s mental health worldwide.

Many people have heard about mental health, but do not know much about it. Therefore, we decided to organise an event to increase awareness and understanding of mental health, in which people can learn about mental health, how to deal with their own struggles, and how to support friends and acquaintances who are suffering.

At this workshop, Professor Terumi Ishii, a full-time psychiatrist at Waseda University’s Health Center, will talk about the current situation at the University from a perspective that is familiar to everyone. Furthermore, through activities and group exchanges with international students, you may hear about the state of mental health around the world, a perspective which is unique to the ICC. We would like to make this an opportunity to broaden your perspective on intercultural understanding.

Mental health problems can happen to anyone; by learning about them, we can learn how to deal with ourselves, and how those suffering feel. Through this event, we hope to deepen our understanding of symptoms and other issues, and learn how to ‘cope’ with them properly, fostering compassion for others and ourselves.

Please join us!

Dr Terumi Ishii

Graduated from the School of Medicine and Health Sciences of University of Tsukuba in 1986.
