I have been accustomed to living in Japan for nearly 20 years. I always believed that Japan was the best and never really encountered “overseas” or different cultures. However, I began to think that it might not be good for me to spend all four years at university and enter the workforce from such a closed environment. So, I took a step forward and participated in ICC’s Japanese-English Online Exchange. Through interacting with American students in English and Japanese, I experienced the joy of encountering different cultures and discovering new things. Through this experience, I learned the importance of understanding different cultures and values. Even though I was not confident in my language skills, I felt personal growth through this exchange and became eager to seek more opportunities for cultural exchange. As a result, I decided to apply to ICC in search of new challenges. The rewarding aspect of being an SSL is the opportunity to meet and work with people who have various values. Although the seniors and staff share the same goal of promoting intercultural understanding, each person has different ideas on how to achieve that goal. Sometimes these differing ideas can make it challenging to reach a consensus. However, this diversity creates a very enjoyable atmosphere. Because we respect each other, we can freely express our opinions without hesitation. ICC provides an environment where this is possible. I am fortunate to spend stimulating days surrounded by excellent SSLs and other staff.<\/p>\n
