Situated just south of the Arctic, Iceland is the farthest corner of Europe from Japan. With only about 370,000 people, population density is Europe\u2019s lowest. Since the Norse Vikings arrived in 874, for centuries Scandinavians and Celtic people have immigrated there. Later, it was ruled by Norway and Denmark before becoming an independent republic in 1944. Iceland\u2019s most remarkable feature is its unique landscape, formed by the mid-Atlantic ridge and volcanic hotspot. The Thingvellir National Park has an amazing landscape, featuring a rift valley where two tectonic plates clash. As a volcanic island, there are hot springs everywhere, including the Blue Lagoon, called the world\u2019s largest.<\/p>\n

At this event, you can experience Iceland\u2019s attractions, connected live online!<\/p>\n

Representatives from the Iceland Embassy in Tokyo will introduce Iceland\u2019s history and culture.\u00a0And reporters from our partner school, University of Iceland, will show us their campus life, live from Iceland!<\/p>\n

Aren\u2019t you curious to see Iceland in November, what student life is like there? It\u2019ll be like a quick trip to Iceland, but online!<\/p>\n

The second half includes an online chat session with University of Iceland students.<\/p>\n

Established in 1911, the University of Iceland is a public institution located in the capital, Reykjav\u00edk. An esteemed school which has produced many of Iceland\u2019s intellectuals, it has strong ties with Waseda as a partner institution. Participants are all students with interest in Japan, so they are looking forward to interacting with us and using Japanese. Of course, the University of Iceland holds many classes in English, so you can also chat in English. ICC staff will even be available to help out during the chat time, so language ability won\u2019t be a problem!<\/p>\n

With so many restrictions on travel and study abroad due to the pandemic, this is a great opportunity only available online. Please join us!<\/p>\n

Commerce and Communication Officer, Embassy of Iceland in Tokyo<\/p>\n

After living in Melbourne, Australia, for three years as a child, he had a rough understanding of English and a vague ambition of a career connecting Japan and the world, then went to Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University to pursue it. Upon graduation he worked at a recruiting company for Vietnamese, then a Japanese advertising agency in Jakarta. Returning to Japan, he worked for an exhibit space run by an American CEO, in event operations and later in overseas sales and import\/export for a sports equipment manufacturer before landing at the Embassy of Iceland in Japan as a public relations and commercial affairs officer. His hobbies include music and film.<\/p>\n
