Japan, unfortunately, is a very disaster-prone country.\u202f\u00a0Earthquakes, in particular, are\u00a0<\/span>a source of anxiety for many\u00a0<\/span>international students.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

As long as you live here, earthquakes are unavoidable and unpredictable, as are many\u00a0<\/span>natural disasters. However, the bright side is that you can always educate yourself\u00a0<\/span>and make sure you have everything you need to stay as safe as possible.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

Disaster preparation is a very serious and important issue that you definitely need to\u00a0<\/span>be thinking about, even if you<\/span>\u2019<\/span>re only planning on staying here for a short while.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

As a nation with a long history of dealing with natural disasters, Japan has developed\u00a0<\/span>its own method and strategy to minimize damage, and this has been traditionally\u00a0<\/span>taught to children in schools as\u00a0<\/span>\u201c\u9632\u707d\u201d<\/span>\u00a0(Bosai).\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

This workshop has been prepared as a place for you to get an understanding of WHY\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Bosai<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0is so important, and to get you started on thinking about exactly HOW you\u00a0<\/span>could get prepared. We will be working with NHK WORLD-JAPAN and\u00a0<\/span>the\u202f<\/span>Waseda<\/span>\u202fstudent society WASEND (<\/span>Waseda<\/span>\u202fDisaster Prevention Education\u00a0<\/span>Support Group). NHK WORLD-JAPAN will be sharing video footage from major\u00a0<\/span>disasters in the past, and tips on how to obtain vital information in your language in\u00a0<\/span>an emergency. WASEND will give us a talk on the work they do to promote BOSAI,\u00a0<\/span>and useful basic knowledge on how you should act in the event of a major\u00a0<\/span>earthquake.\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

This\u00a0<\/span>isn<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t a simple one-way lecture though: the whole point is about how YOU get\u00a0<\/span>involved. Each mini-talk will be followed by a discussion session, where you can\u00a0talk in\u00a0<\/span>small groups, with fellow participants and WASEND members. Topic sheets and\u00a0<\/span>resources are provided, so you won<\/span>\u2019<\/span>t get stuck!\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

NHK WORLD-JAPAN<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is the international service of Japan’s public media organization\u00a0<\/span>NHK. It provides the latest information on Japan and Asia through television, radio\u00a0<\/span>and online to a global audience.<\/span>\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n

WASEND<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(<\/span>Waseda<\/span>\u00a0Student Organization for the Education of Natural Disasters)\u00a0<\/span>consists of students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at the\u00a0<\/span>School of Creative Science and Engineering, and we visit primary schools inside and\u00a0<\/span>outside of Japan, to help them learn about Bosai in a fun way. Other activities include\u00a0<\/span>creating picture books on Bosai and displays at Bosai-themed events, and also visiting\u00a0<\/span>areas affected by major natural disasters.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n

Our goal is\u202fto reach\u202fmore people in raising awareness on Bosai,\u202fand\u202fto\u202feducate\u202fpeople\u00a0<\/span>more on natural disasters,\u202fso\u202fthey can then\u202fuse the knowledge towards prevention\u00a0<\/span>measures and disaster relief, in order to minimize disaster damage as much as\u00a0<\/span>possible, through Bosai education.<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n
