I was told about the ICC Online Writing Contest<\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u201d<\/span>Japan in Me<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0by a friend who encouraged me\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0enter<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>After reading the contest\u2019s guidelines, I started wondering about what to talk about and share with everyone. As I was thinking about \u201cJapan in Me,\u201d I recalled my past travels and experiences here in Japan: the places I went, the things I\u2019ve seen, eaten, etc. Among those memories, my trip to Teshima and Naoshima\u00a0islands was one of the most vivid<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0in particular the visit to the Teshima Art Museum.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The poem I wrote for the contest takes its inspiration from one I had written while I was inside the Teshima<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Art Museum two years ago.\u00a0 Although both poems share the same question, \u201cFrom the balcony on the fourth floor\u201d goes much deeper into it, trying to provide a possible answer. It also conveys, to some extent, a sense of loneliness and the feeling of being lost. I believe these emotions might be shared by many readers as one of the consequences of the outbreak of the coronavirus, which strongly affected and marked our lives in various ways.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The main question behind\u00a0<\/span>the poem<\/span>\u00a0is: where do we belong to?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mishima Yukio<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0in the epilogue of his book\u00a0<\/span>Sun and Steel<\/span><\/i>, wrote a poem, “<\/span>Icarus,”\u00a0<\/span>where I believe he addressed the same question. Personally, I couldn\u2019t find any answer in it. Mishima\u2019s beautiful words left me wondering whether, in the end, I belonged to the earth or to the sky. When I was inside the Teshima museum, I found my own answer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope that by reading the poem, the reader may empathize with it and try to find his or her own answer while listening to his or her emotions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am really glad to have had the opportunity to share my thoughts with everyone.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
