Constructed by the newly-established Pahlavi state between 1927 and 1938, the railway is commonly seen as the symbol of national political, economic, and cultural centralization undertaken by Reza Shah Pahlavi (r. 1925-41). Yet, once we shift focus from the shah to planners, builders, operators, and users of the railway, we can see a large-scale co-production of mobilities and immobilities on local, national, and transnational levels.
