The Waseda University Organization for Islamic Area Studies welcomes Iranian Actress Taraneh Alidoosti to Japan with a screening of two of her films, followed by a talk with the actress herself. Taraneh Alidoosti starred in the film \u201cThe Salesman<\/em>\u201d, directed by Asghar Farhadi, which won of the most recent Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. She is visiting for the Japanese opening of \u201cThe Salesman<\/em>\u201d. This event will feature a screening of two of her earlier films, as well as a post-screening talk including a Q&A period. Taraneh Alidoosti\u2019s career as a film actress began in her teens. She has garnered acclaim in recent years for her performances films such as Asghar Farhadi\u2019s \u201cAbout Elly<\/em>\u201d, and attention for boycotting the most recent Academy Awards ceremony in opposition to the Trump administration\u2019s attempt to ban people from Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.<\/p>\n

Synopsis: Fifteen-year-old Taraneh, whose widowed father is in jail, refuses the unwanted attentions of carpet salesman Amir – until Amir’s mother, at the insistence of his son, talks Taraneh into accepting Amir’s marriage proposal. However, instead of a typical marriage, the union is in form of a temporary religious ceremony. Within four months the couple realize that they are incompatible, they divorce and Amir emigrates back to Germany. When Taraneh discovers that she is pregnant she decides against all advice and intense social pressure, to keep the baby.<\/p>\n

The man and the woman are giving money away to the poor souls they encounter on the road. Is this a good-will mission? A game of honor and temptation? A psychotic gamble? As the car ploughs through the icy terrain, answers become increasingly elusive and tension is built up to an unbearable pitch.<\/p>\n
