Mamluk Numismatics: An Intensive Seminar<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instructor: Warren Schultz<\/p>\n

This seminar in Mamluk numismatics will provide the fundamentals of numismatic research, an introduction to the wider field of Islamic numismatics, and a knowledge base of the breadth of Mamluk coinage that will enable future research in this field with confidence. This monetary evidence is a rich source for economic, political, and social history, and the seminar will provide\u00a0an\u00a0opportunity for hands-on work with many Mamluk coins. A bibliography will be provided, and daily readings will be assigned. After completion, participants will be familiar with the historiography of the field, be able to identify the various phases of Mamluk coinage, as well as recognize the many different variables that define the more than 1000 known types of Mamluk coins.\u00a0\u00a0The seminar is intended for advanced graduate students, recent post-doctorates, and other qualified participants.\u00a0Knowledge of Arabic\u00a0is required, as is an awareness of the span of Islamic history, but no previous numismatic experience is required.<\/p>\n

Historians and Technology: The Introduction of Firearms in Iran and Central Asia\u2014Prehistory of the Gunpowder Empires<\/strong><\/p>\n

This seminar will focus on issues of military and technological history as presented in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish sources down to the beginning of the 16th<\/sup> century after which the use of firearms by the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals is well-attested. We will examine the scholarly literature on the types of weaponry used in Islamic lands from the 11th<\/sup> through the 15th<\/sup> century. The Encyclopaedia of Islam<\/em> articles \u201cBarud\u201d and \u201cHisn\u201d will be scrutinized along with the monographs of David Ayalon and J. R. Partington. Issues of comparative history and technological diffusion will be addressed through reading and assessing such works as Joseph Needham\u2019s Science and Civilization in China<\/em>. Selected Arabic, Persian, and Turkish narrative and encyclopedic sources will be excerpted, considered, and analyzed. (A bibliography and selections will be provided.) Finally, visual evidence will also be utilized to attempt to come to some conclusions about the nature of military technology in the period under consideration.<\/p>\n
