In that sense, Egypt can be understood as a single whole. Nevertheless, Egypt is composed of many elements: regional societies that have different environments and socio-economic conditions.

In this workshop, we focus on one of these regional societies: the Buhayra region, in the northern periphery of the Nile Delta. By focusing on this region, we hope to analyze with clarity the interaction between environment and ‘regional society’, how environment affected the society at the regional level, and how the peasants in one such ‘regional society’ coped with the environment. The workshop will begin with a brief introduction (“Why Buhayra”) composed of presentations by researchers specialized in different periods of Buhayra’s history. The introduction will serve to highlight and elucidate the importance of focusing on a single region, and the Buhayra region in particular. Following this introduction, Prof. Stuart Borsch (History Professor at Assumption College, MA, USA) will discuss the Buhayra region from the perspective of his economic and quantitative research for the medieval (641 – 1517 CE) period of Egyptian history.

Prof. Stuart Borsch is a specialist in the study of the Nile irrigation system of medieval Egypt (641-1517 CE), and has published many articles on the subject concerned, notably for the northern Nile Delta.

Date

January 20, 2017

Venue

Sophia University, Yotsuya Campus, Room 2-603　(6th floor, Building No.2)

Program

Section 1 Why Buhayra? 17:00 – 17:30

From the Modern Perspective Hiroshi KATO 加藤博(Hitotsubashi University　一橋大学) &
