Yuka Tateishi, a lawyer who represented a transgendered woman who was the plaintiff in a case against their employer, the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), was invited to give a public lecture hosted by Kyoko Ishida, chairperson of Waseda University\u2019s Office for the Promotion of Equality and Diversity and a professor in the Waseda University faculty of law, on December 7, 2023. The title of Tateishi’s address was as headlined above. Approximately 200 persons from both inside and outside the university attended.<\/p>\n

Tateishi focused her talk on the transgendered woman\u2019s case against METI and addressed a variety of key issues including sexual and gendered violence, “lookism,” prejudice, and discrimination. She stated that the problems and environments transgendered individuals face are issues for people of all genders. Tateishi’s passionate, thought-provoking content conveyed the realities of transgendered individuals\u2019 inequality in today’s Japan in an easy-to-understand way. After her speech, participants showed their keen interest by asking insightful questions and sharing their own ideas and opinions. The lecture was a meaningful experience for all in attendance.<\/p>\n
