His achievements as a director are not only stage performances but also movies of opera and other vocal works, in which Carmina Burana (1975) can be said to be an especially creative work. However, there have been few chances for the work to be considered in depth because it steps somewhat beyond performances of opera, whose study focused on direction has only a short history. In this presentation, I will analyze and consider Ponnelle’s direction of Carmina Burana, mainly from the viewpoint of its allegorical aspects. This movie depicts not only “the struggles between good and evil, men and women, fantasy and reality” [Reynolds:1995], but the music and the texts are given profound meanings in various ways, for example, by the insertion of pictorial works. These methods show Ponnelle’s deep insights into the work and the relation with contemporary opera direction. Evaluating this movie in the context of the performance history of opera, we can consider Ponnelle’s direction from both aspects: his unique perspective and the trends of contemporary opera direction.

Profile of Presenter: Arisa Tachi graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Musicology.
