Producers and workers of cash crops such as coffee are reportedly forced to lead precarious lives due to exposure to fluctuations in international market prices. Therefore, an international standard known as “fairtrade” has been developed as an effort to support the livelihoods of producers and workers by setting guaranteed minimum prices and other measures. However, do producers and workers of cash crops lead the precarious lives that fairtrade organizations assume? Introducing the results of fieldwork in the coffee-growing region of Lao PDR, this course clarifies the livelihoods of coffee producers and examines the effectiveness of support through fairtrade from the perspective of cultural anthropology. At the same time, this course explores what the perspective of cultural anthropology entails.

~Syllabus~

Week 1: General Characteristics of Fair-Trade Movement
Week 2: How Do We Examine Fairtrade’s Impact on Producers?
Week 3: Lao Coffee Cultivation Area and Livelihood Diversification
Week 4: Fairtrade’s Impact on Lao Coffee Communities

If you are interested, please register for the course by pressing “Enroll” from the link below and enjoy the course.

Anthropology of Fairtrade: A Case of Coffee-Growing Area in Lao PDR | edX

All WasedaX courses are available via Waseda University| edX

[Contact information]
Center for Higher Education Studies, Waseda University
E-mail: ches-staff[at]list.waseda.jp

New course offering from WasedaX A new edX course, “Anthropology of Fairtrade: A Case of Coffee-Growing Area i […]

[95
84,83,94,81,77,119
post-6475","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en","tag-culture-en","tag-education-en","tag-general-en","tag-global-en","tag-movie-en","tag-topics-en
["GET
