PROFILE
I am conducting research to explain the rationale behind fighting techniques in traditional Japanese martial arts such as Judo and Sumo. The findings of my research are useful not only for coaching to improve athletic performance, but also for improving the quality of physical education classes in educational settings. Martial arts are often characterized by two principles: (1) do not go directly against the power of the opponent, and (2) use the power of the opponent to your advantage. Through my courses, I will explain these principles from a scientific perspective.

Movement analysis experiment

Figure 1 shows an experiment of movement analysis involving “Ukemi” (receiving a technique). In this example, we analyzed how the Uke (the person being thrown) takes the Ukemi when being thrown and examined what the posture of Uke is easy for the Tori (the person throwing) to apply in the particular situation.

Figure 1: Analysis of the movement of “Ukemi” when throwing  an opponent by “Taiotoshi” in a controlled setting.

Figure 2 shows an experimental of movement analysis of the “Kata-guruma.” With the change in the rules that prohibits holding the opponent’s lower body (traditional Kata-guruma involves holding opponent’s lower body), a new form of Kata-guruma is now used in Judo matches. We examined what information would be useful for Judo athletes who are trying to master this technique.
