報告テーマ:Breaking Multiple Barriers: A Gender Comparison of Newcomer Chinese Skilled Immigrants in Contemporary Japan
This paper aims to discuss how newcomer Chinese skilled immigrants breaking the barriers and striving the equality in Japan from the economic, social and cultural aspects under gender comparison. As a significant immigrant group in Japan, with different level of human capital and socioeconomic capital, Chinese immigrant men and women opened up their migration process with different goals and planning after their arrival to Japan. Yet, gender barriers, employment instability even pressure of child raising strictly constrained their life qualities in Japanese labor market. To understand the obstacles and challenges which Chinese skilled newcomers are facing during migration process, mixed methods are utilized. Reflecting on skilled immigrants from China, this study explains their engagement in Japan. Focusing on the interrelation between gender, migration and inequality, this study further reflects the similarities in their circumstances highlighting the growing salience of men and women in the different sectors their ‘new’ social space. By draws on dataset and narratives, this study explores the quests of migration and gender in transnational social spaces. Often intersecting with class, ethnicity and generation, gender is an enabling tool for comprehending migrants’ changing social, economic, political and cultural roles in modern Japanese society. Especially for migrant women in Japan, they still represent the continuing struggle of women in Asia and elsewhere for equality.
