The Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies

The Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies

The Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS) was founded in April 1998. The inaugural issue of the “Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies (Ajia Taiheiyō Tōkyū in Japanese)” was published in January 2000, in which all of the faculty members affiliated with the International Relations Major at GSAPS contributed papers at the suggestion of the First Dean of GSAPS, Professor Ken’ichi Goto. Since the inaugural issue of the Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies, 21 volumes in total have been published as of December, 2013. This journal also provides opportunities for research fellows in the WIAPS Research Groups to publish research outcomes and it serves as the departmental bulletin for GSAPS full-time faculty members. The name of this journal in Japanese, “Ajia Taiheiyō Tōkyū”, has inherited the term “Tōkyū” from the journal “Shakai Kagaku Tōkyū” (Journal of Social Sciences in English), which had a long and distinguished history as the departmental journal of the Waseda University Institute of Social Sciences, the predecessor of the international relations cluster at the Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies. However, with the closure of the Institute of Social Sciences, various aspects of the journal’s distribution and operational know-how had to be created anew. Professor Takeshi Hara was in charge of the new journal’s inaugural issue and Professor Michio Yamaoka took over for Volumes 2 through Volume 4. Since Volume 5, Professor Eiji Murashima has been engaged in the journal’s publication and related administrative operations. According to the “Citation information by Nii[CiNii]”, the Journal of Asia-Pacific Studies is currently distributed to 134 libraries and is stocked at major national universities in institutions across Asia, America, and Europe. Most of the articles published in the journal are also available through the Waseda University Repository on the web. The Waseda University Repository can be accessed from the top page of the Waseda University Library.
