He comments that the dominant features of the landscape the Martian would observe would not be markets, nations, or governments, but organizations. Organizations and institutions have long been a central topic in sociology, and have had a recent renaissance in the economics literature as well.<\/p>\n<p>The prevailing economic theories of institutions and organizations treat them as rational solutions to strategic problems of interaction and coordination. In this paper, I present some of these views and how they figure into the design of models. I then question the extent to which they are properly considered theories of the nature of institutions at all.
