On Monday, June 1, 2026, the Institute for Advanced Social Sciences (IASS) hosted the international seminar “The Timing and Pacing of Urbanization: From Growth to Decline” at the Waseda Campus.<\/p>\n

For this seminar, we welcomed Professor Andr\u00e9 Sorensen from the University of Toronto, an expert in Japanese urban studies and historical institutionalism, to deliver a keynote lecture on the dynamics of urbanization.<\/p>\n

Keynote Lecture and Panel Discussion<\/h3>\n

During the keynote lecture in the first session, Professor Sorensen provided a comprehensive overview from the perspective of macro-historical and comparative-historical analysis (CHA). He examined how the “timing”, “pacing”, and “patterning” of large-scale urbanization shape long-term consequences for city planning and governance.<\/p>\n

In the subsequent panel discussion, Associate Professor Christian Dimmer and Assistant Professor Yudi Liu took the stage. Associate Professor Dimmer presented on the socio-ecological transformations of Tokyo’s Machik\u014dba<\/i> (small urban factories), while Assistant Professor Liu shared recent insights on the institutional dynamics surrounding cross-regional railway infrastructure and land development. Their presentations sparked a lively discussion that intersected deeply with Professor Sorensen\u2019s theoretical frameworks.<\/p>\n

Participation by Researchers from Japan and Abroad<\/h3>\n

The event was held entirely in-person and welcomed approximately 25 participants, primarily university students and early-career researchers from Tokyo.<\/p>\n

We were also honored to receive distinguished guests active at the forefront of the field, including Professor June Komisar (Toronto Metropolitan University), Assistant Professor Alex Shengxiao Li (National University of Singapore), and Project Assistant Professor Karri Flinkman (Nagoya Institute of Technology). The Q&A session featured highly engaging exchanges of opinions involving the entire floor, bringing the event to a successful conclusion.<\/p>\n
