\nChildren’s lifestyle behaviors\u2014physical activity, screen time, and sleep\u2014are known to play a fundamental role in physical and mental health. However, evidence spanning multiple developmental stages within the same community has been limited, and studies focusing specifically on rural areas of Japan were especially scarce prior to this work.<\/p>\n

\nBy examining lifestyle behaviors across five developmental stages within a single rural community, the study found that: (1) sleep duration decreased from 9.60 h\/day in toddlers to 7.83 h\/day in junior high students, driven primarily by progressively later bedtimes rather than earlier waking; (2) screen time increased nearly fourfold (1.46 to 5.70 h\/day, p<0.001), with the sharpest rise occurring between lower and upper elementary grades; and (3) outdoor play time remained below recommended levels at every stage, with a significant sex gap emerging in upper elementary school (girls less active outdoors than boys).<\/p>\n

\nData were collected via parent- and self-reported questionnaires (September\u2013October 2021) from 1,192 children aged 1\u201315 years attending four preschools, four elementary schools, and two junior high schools in Sakawa Town, Kochi Prefecture (response rate 74.6%). Bedtime, wake time, sleep duration, outdoor play time, and screen time were compared using two-way ANOVA with school stage and sex as factors, and linear regression models were fitted with ordered developmental stage as the predictor to test trends.<\/p>\n

\u672c\u7814\u7a76\u306f\u3001\u4e0d\u5065\u5eb7\u306a\u751f\u6d3b\u7fd2\u6163\u304c\u5e7c\u5150\u671f\u304b\u3089\u3059\u3067\u306b\u59cb\u307e\u308a\u3001\u767a\u9054\u3068\u3068\u3082\u306b\u5f37\u307e\u3063\u3066\u3044\u304f\u3053\u3068\u3092\u793a\u3057\u3001\u65e9\u671f\u304b\u3089\u306e\u30e9\u30a4\u30d5\u30b3\u30fc\u30b9\u7684\u306a\u516c\u8846\u885b\u751f\u4ecb\u5165\u306e\u5fc5\u8981\u6027\u3092\u793a\u5506\u3059\u308b\u3002\u8fb2\u6751\u5730\u57df\u7279\u6709\u306e\u4ea4\u901a\u624b\u6bb5\u306e\u5236\u7d04\u3084\u30ec\u30af\u30ea\u30a8\u30fc\u30b7\u30e7\u30f3\u65bd\u8a2d\u3078\u306e\u30a2\u30af\u30bb\u30b9\u306e\u4e4f\u3057\u3055\u304c\u3001\u5b50\u3069\u3082\u306e\u751f\u6d3b\u7fd2\u6163\u5f62\u6210\u306b\u5f71\u97ff\u3057\u3066\u3044\u308b\u53ef\u80fd\u6027\u304c\u3042\u308a\u3001\u5b66\u6821\u30fb\u5bb6\u5ead\u30fb\u5730\u57df\u30fb\u884c\u653f\u304c\u9023\u643a\u3057\u305f\u652f\u63f4\u7b56\u306e\u91cd\u8981\u6027\u3092\u63d0\u8d77\u3059\u308b\u3002
\nThese findings highlight that unhealthy sleep, activity, and screen-use patterns emerge as early as toddlerhood and intensify with age, underscoring the value of a life-course approach to child health promotion. The results point to structural factors specific to rural settings\u2014such as limited transportation and reduced access to recreational facilities\u2014as potential contributors, supporting the case for coordinated efforts among schools, families, communities, and local government to promote healthier daily routines.<\/p>\n

\u4eca\u5f8c\u306e\u8ab2\u984c\uff0fFuture issues<\/h3>\n

\u672c\u7814\u7a76\u306f\u6a2a\u65ad\u7684\u30c7\u30b6\u30a4\u30f3\u3067\u3042\u308b\u305f\u3081\u56e0\u679c\u95a2\u4fc2\u3092\u7279\u5b9a\u3059\u308b\u3053\u3068\u306f\u3067\u304d\u306a\u3044\u3002\u4eca\u5f8c\u306f\u3001\u7e26\u65ad\u7684\u7814\u7a76\u306b\u3088\u308b\u767a\u9054\u7684\u8ecc\u8de1\u306e\u691c\u8a3c\u3001\u52a0\u901f\u5ea6\u8a08\u7b49\u306e\u5ba2\u89b3\u7684\u6307\u6a19\u3092\u7528\u3044\u305f\u8eab\u4f53\u6d3b\u52d5\u8a55\u4fa1\u3001\u9031\u672b\u3092\u542b\u3081\u305f\u5305\u62ec\u7684\u304b\u3064\u6a19\u6e96\u5316\u3055\u308c\u305f\u8abf\u67fb\u624b\u6cd5\u306e\u9069\u7528\u304c\u6c42\u3081\u3089\u308c\u308b\u3002
\nAs a cross-sectional study, this research cannot establish causal relationships between age and lifestyle behaviors. Future studies should employ longitudinal designs to confirm developmental trajectories, incorporate objective physical activity measures such as accelerometry, and assess behaviors using validated instruments across both weekdays and weekends.<\/p>\n

The rapid rise in screen time, in particular, is a challenge shared by rural and urban communities alike.
