The World of the Hanshin Tigers: An Anthropology of Contemporary Sport<\/p>\n

Abstract: For the last three decades of the twentieth century, the Hanshin Tigers were the heart and soul of Kansai professional sports and emblematic of a sport that was so central to the development of transportation, media, and leisure in that region. To an anthropologist, the Hanshin Tigers represent an intriguing lifeworld centered on the production and presentation of what was arguably the most important sport in twentieth-century Japan. In this talk, I will first outline the five key elements of Hanshin Tigers sports world: the stadium, the team, the management, the fans, and the media. I will then introduce four themes embodied in this sports world: the uncanny mimicry of Bushido baseball; Japanese baseball as edu- tainment; Osaka\u2019s second-city complex and Hanshin Tigers baseball as the nobility of failure; and the Hanshin Tigers baseball as workplace melodrama.<\/p>\n

Mega-events focus the world’s attention on a particular place and a nation and the success thereof, in either hosting or performing well in the event. Throughout the world, expectations were running high that China would make usage of hosting the Beijing Games to promote a positive image to the world. This paper takes a critical look at the discourse on the Beijing Games as a public diplomacy tool. Empirical data from global opinion polls are analyzed to demonstrate the weak impact of even the world\u2019s largest sport mega-event on altering global perceptions. Two main propositions will be advanced: Firstly, expectations that a sports event can improve the image of a country are overrated; secondly, having been locked in the Olympic \u201cdouble-bind\u201d, a system of contradictory messages to which the host is simultaneously obliged, China had no chance in the contest for meaning-making which the Western media won hands down.<\/p>\n
