Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to \u201cactions that appear to further some social good, beyond the interests of the firm and that which is required by law\u201d (McWilliams & Siegel, 2001, p.117). As CSR has become an integral part of businesses, a growing number of sport organizations have started to incorporate CSR activities into their operations (Babiak & Wolfe, 2009; Godfrey, 2009; Inoue, Kent, & Lee, 2011). For example, the National Football League (NFL) launched the NFL Play 60 in 2006 to encourage children to engage in physical activity for the prevention of childhood obesity, and the Go Green program of the Philadelphia Eagles promotes environmental awareness, recycling, and energy conservation.CSR in sport is unique because \u201csport\u2026contains qualities that make it a powerful force in effecting positive social contributions\u201d (Smith & Westerbeek, 2007, p.25) and thus has the potential to implement a highly impactful CSR program. One of such qualities may be the large communication power of sport that results from its valuable resources, such as venues, events, signage, corporate sponsors, and access to media (Babiak & Wolfe, 2009;). In addition, a high level of identification and passion that sport can generate would likely increase the effect of CSR of sport organizations on one\u2019s attitudes and behavior (Babiak & Wolfe, 2009). Given this anticipated high impact, a growing body of sport management research has assessed CSR programs of sport organizations in terms of their benefits that accrue to the business and society (e.g., Inoue & Kent, in press; Inoue et al., 2011).The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of the CSR concept and its application to the context of sport. The presentation covers the historical development of CSR, its definitions and scopes, and a review of extant empirical studies especially within the sport management field. It concludes by offering several directions for future work on this study area.<\/p>\n

Abstract: \u3000Young men in Dunedin, New Zealand, must negotiate their masculinities through the spectre of the mythical hegemonic stereotype of the Southern \u2018hard man\u2019 and through various representations of larrikin student culture. Satirical cross-dressing employed by the latter patronises both transgender people and the few men who play \u2018feminine sports\u2019 such as netball. However there are also indications that the power of these hegemonic masculine ideals are weakening; driven at least partly by the terrible health consequences associated with over-conformity to these ideas. Fractures are also reflected through various national conversations about certain New Zealand national rugby team representatives (Dan Carter\u2019s success as an underwear model and Ma\u2019a Nonu\u2019s decision to wear eyeliner are two pertinent examples) and through the small but growing number of otherwise hegemonic masculine men who now embrace men\u2019s netball as a \u2018second sport\u2019.
