The apparent discrepancy between the successful outcomes of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games and the critical commentary from many scholars in the buildup to them is the focus of this presentation. The media contribute to the creation of a games time \u2018bubble\u2019 during which critical commentary is sidelined as those with greater prestige and credibility primarily define the \u2018reality\u2019 of the event. This creates a great contrast between the euphoria of the games coverage and the skeptical tone adopted by most scholarly studies. The presentation will analyze the kind of coverage the U.K. media produced during the buildup to the London Games and the event itself.<\/p>\n

Sports mega-events have played a leading role for football\u2019s transformation into a global business. Traditional supporter groups have resisted against the dark side of \u2018modern football\u2019: all-seater stadiums, preemptive security measures, and the incorporation of their local clubs into a global sport-media complex. But there are more issues at stake. Logic and logistics of crowd control and space management have been extended from the stadium to the cities, involving the partial privatization of public space and the gradual suspension of basic civil rights. The political significance of sports mega events lies in their consequences for the overall governance of citizens, not just in stadiums and host cities, but also for those beyond the demarcated places. I will show how football in a state of emergency has been (mis)used to rearrange the relationships between state, economy and the public.<\/p>\n
Reflections on the London Olympics of 2012<\/p>\n

This presentation examines the lead-up to the 2012 London Olympic Games, the response to the Games and the implications for legacy. The presentation deals with the backdrop of a changing economic environment, with security fears, and with legacy in three specific respects \u2013 the legacy for London, the legacy for the United Kingdom as a whole, and the legacy for British sport. On 6 July 2005, the announcement was made that London had beaten Paris for the right to host the Olympic Games of 2012. The desire to hold the Games in London for a third time was linked to a relatively widespread belief that the United Kingdom was in a relatively healthy political and economic state and that London was arguably the world\u2019s leading financial centre. The bid also reflected Prime Minister Tony Blair\u2019s ambition to show off the UK brand to the rest of the world. The story that followed was one of a highly successful sporting event, in difficult economic times and despite security fears. Questions remain, however, concerning how much has actually changed or will change once the summer of 2012 has receded into the past.<\/p>\n
