Skeletal muscles adapt themselves to varied exercise stimuli in a manner that they respond appropriately to the new mechanical and metabolic demands: intense resistance exercises generally cause increases in muscular size and strength (McDonagh and Davies 1984), whereas exercises with much smaller load and larger volume result in an increase in the muscle oxidative capacity without considerable increase in muscular size (Holloszy and Booth 1976). For the particular purpose of muscular hypertrophy and concomitant increase in strength, it has been believed that intensity higher than 65% of one repetition maximum (1RM) is to be used (McDonagh and Davies 1984).<\/p>\n
On the other hand, we have shown that a low-intensity resistance exercise (20-50%1RM) combined with vascular occlusion (occlusive resistance training) induced marked increases in size and strength in elbow flexor muscles of old women and in knee extensor muscles of athletes, even if the intensity of exercise was much lower than expected to promote muscular hypertrophy (Takarada et al. 2000b; Takarada et al. 2002). The mechanisms underlying such an effect of externally applied occlusive stimulus have been interpreted as follows: 1), additional recruitment of fast-twitch fibres in a hypoxic condition (Takarada et al. 2000a; Takarada et al. 2000b) 2), stimulated secretion of growth hormone (GH) and norepinephrine (Takarada et al. 2000a).\u3000I will first talk about the acute effects of the occlusive resistance training, then chronic (long-term) effects of that. In addition, I am going to show the latest data concerning the effects of the occlusive resistance training on fMRI-measured brain activation in my laboratory.<\/p>\n
