Advanced science and engineering research from the university today has the potential to revolutionize our technologies. However, conventionally, scientists focus more on technical performances such as material characteristics; and neglects the environmental consequences of the future application in industry. If the impact is later found to be negative, this will lead to a wastage of research resources. An easy way to prevent this is to support the decision-making at early-development-stage using life cycle assessment (LCA). Here, we share our experience in a collaborative work [1]. We present a framework to concurrent develop and (environmental impact) assess the emerging lab-scale technologies. We apply the framework to a case of carbon nanotubes (CNT) production. We show that LCA plays the role in bridging scientific knowledge to our climate-emergency society.
