The mathematics and physics unit at Waseda has a good standing in high-quality, high-impact research. The research areas include quantum mechanics, quantum mathematics, biophysics, mathematical fluid mechanics, as well as numerical analysis in these areas. We are one of the highly-accomplished groups in the world in those subjects. To maintain the high research quality and impact, we have a shared doctoral program between the three schools in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. With the doctoral students, we strive to cover a broad spectrum of research areas and multidisciplinary research that rely on intensive mathematics. We have been initiating new research topics beyond the research areas where we have high accomplishments. In the second phase of the mathematics and physics unit, we will play a key role at Waseda in bringing together more of the researchers using intensive mathematics. We will include researchers outside the Faculty of Science and Engineering, such as those in the School of Political Science and Economics. I am determined to continue the tradition Professor Yoshihiro Shibata started in performing and encouraging high-quality research. I will look forward to continuing to interact with him and benefiting from his wise counsel.
