Research Topics<\/h3>\n

\u201cHow can a computer recognize a human voice in a noisy environment as effectively as a person can?\u201d<\/p>\n

At Makino Laboratory, we conduct research using signal processing and deep learning with the aim of creating a world in which computers can hear as effectively as humans.<\/p>\n

Research Process and Learning<\/h3>\n

Makino Laboratory holds seminars every Tuesday and Friday. At the Tuesday seminar, all laboratory members gather, and several students present their research topics and recent progress. At the Friday seminar, we divide into two groups \u2014 the Signal Processing Group and the Deep Neural Network Group \u2014 to engage in more specialized discussions. Professor Makino listens carefully to the students\u2019 presentations and provides detailed questions and comments. We also receive valuable feedback from other laboratory members. Through these seminars, we often gain new insights that would be difficult to discover on our own.<\/p>\n

Makino Laboratory also provides an excellent research environment. Even outside seminar hours, students can discuss their questions with Professor Makino and other laboratory members. The student room is equipped with dedicated computing servers, and each student has their own desk and monitor, allowing us to conduct research in a well-equipped environment.<\/p>\n

We held a barbecue in April 2025 to strengthen friendships among laboratory members.<\/p><\/div>\n

Lab Environment<\/h3>\n

The laboratory also offers many opportunities to connect with people and organizations outside the university. Professor Makino has strong relationships with companies and overseas universities, and we sometimes interact with them through collaborative research projects and academic conferences. In addition, master\u2019s students are encouraged to present their work at least once at an international conference. This gives us opportunities to communicate with researchers from around the world through our research.<\/p>\n

Makino Laboratory is scheduled to conclude its activities in March 2027. As a member of the laboratory, I feel fortunate to conduct my research in such a supportive environment and to learn from Professor Makino and my fellow laboratory members. I hope to make the most of the remaining time and carry the knowledge and experiences gained here into my future research and career.<\/p>\n
