My primary area of research is liberty\/freedom and its related concepts, including oppression, domination, power, agency, citizenship and nationality. I seek to do political theory imaginatively and creatively, combining different methods and approaches beyond the conventional sub-disciplinary divides.<br \/>\nMy publications include Hannah Arendt and Isaiah Berlin: Freedom, Politics and Humanity (Princeton University Press, 2011), Arendt on Freedom, Liberation, and Revolution (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019), and \u2018Fukuzawa Yukichi\u2019s Liberal Nationalism\u2019, American Political Science Review (2023).<br \/>\nPrior to joining Waseda University in 2025, I worked at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (2022-25), Aarhus University (2019-22), I\u2019Institut d\u2019\u00e9tudes avanc\u00e9es de Paris (2018-19), University of Oxford (2012-18), and Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs (2008-15). I also held visiting positions at Columbia University (2010-11), University of Tokyo (2012), and the Hannah Arendt Center at Bard College (2017).<br \/>\nI lead the Comparative Political Theory Project at Waseda University with a special interest in the development of liberal (and ostensibly \u2018Western\u2019 or \u2018originally Western\u2019) ideas in Japan and East Asia.
