After working at Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Chobin Research Institute, Aoyama Gakuin University as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Economics, and the University of Tokyo as a professor in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, he has been in his current position since 2006. He was a visiting fellow at Cambridge University in 2014 and at Yonsei University in South Korea in 2015. He has served on numerous government committees, including the Foreign Exchange Council and the Industrial Structure Council. He is a member of the Science Council of Japan for the 15th and 16th terms.
