His research interests include democratization, elections and party system, ethnic politics, civil war, transitional justice and reconciliation, with special emphasis on the ex-Yugoslav countries. He has published a monograph on ex-Yugoslavia, titled The State Torn Apart: Democratization and Ethnic Problems in the Former Yugoslavia (Tokyo: Yushindo-Kobunsya, 2003) as well as various journal articles, book chapters and co-edited books.
