This research project (PJ) addresses the question of how scientific experts and expert knowledge can gain trust in the media of the digital society.
\nModern society, which is based on science, continues to face various socio-scientific issues, ranging from the Great East Japan Earthquake, climate change, to COVID-19. However, the \u201ctrust\u201d in science in the media is wavering. In a digitalized hybrid media environment, this project will analyze questions such as how scientific expertise and experts can become objects of trust (or distrust) (trustworthiness), whether the information provided by experts is considered trustworthy or untrustworthy (credibility), and whether they can actually be trusted (trustfulness) from diverse perspectives, including interview surveys, big data analysis, experimental research, and international comparative studies.
\nAdditionally, this project is unique in that it directly applies research findings to society. To this end, we will optimize, improve, and relaunch the Science Media Center (SMCJ), an independent organization that has proven effective in connecting science and media, to better suit the modern digital media society. In other words, this project aims to realize a democratic society based on trust in science by implementing the results of scientific investigations and analyses of social discussions related to science through the SMCJ.<\/p>\n
