Global Economic History serves as a platform for dialogue between historians and economists. It encompasses a wide range of topics related to long-term changes in economies, including the origins of economic growth and inequality, as well as the roles of market economies, money, states, legal systems, customs, and colonisation. Based on two approaches\u2014comparison and connection\u2014this field explores the multiplicity of developmental paths across countries and regions. It also aims to bridge national histories with international relations.
\nOur research group aims to (1) situate Japanese economic history within a global context by clarifying commonalities and differences with other countries and regions, and (2) reveal the distinctive characteristics of economic development in Africa, Eurasia, and the Americas.
\nSpecifically, in the first half of the research year, we focus primarily on case studies of Japanese economic history, followed by case studies in global economic history in the second half. We plan to hold regular seminars, including inviting distinguished guests from external institutions, and to collaborate with research groups both inside and outside Waseda University to organise workshops.<\/p>\n
