Our objective is to examine whether prior health-related<br \/>\n employment affects RN workforce supply.<br \/>\n\u3010Methods\u3011: We estimated a cross-sectional bivariate probit model using the<br \/>\n 2008 National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN)<br \/>\n (un-weighted\/weighted N=21,653\/2 million). The two dichotomous dependent<br \/>\n variables were (a) working or not working as RN and (b) working full-time<br \/>\n or part-time as RN. The key covariates were six dichotomous variables of<br \/>\n prior health-related employment before initial RN education: manager,<br \/>\n LPN\/LVN, allied health, clerk, nursing aide, and all other health-related<br \/>\n positions. Other covariates included age, race, highest level of nursing<br \/>\n education, full\/part-time student, ages of children, other household<br \/>\n income, and predicted market RN hourly wage.<br \/>\n\u3010Results\u3011: The results showed that prior health-related employment in<br \/>\n relatively lower wage occupations, such as allied health, clerk, or nursing<br \/>\n aide, was positively associated with working as an RN (marginal effect =<br \/>\n 0.009-0.027, p<0.05~0.10; the reference group is RNs without prior\n health-related employment). It also showed that prior health-related\n employment in relatively higher wage categories, such as a health care\n manager or LPN\/LVN, was positively associated with working full-time as an\n RN (marginal effect = 0.039-0.096. p<0.01).\n\u3010Conclusions\u3011: RNs with prior health-related employment were more likely to\n work as RNs and\/or work longer hours than those without such prior\n experience. Policy implications for stabilizing the long-run RN workforce\n supply are to promote an expanded career ladder program and a nursing\n school admission policy that targets non-RN healthcare workers
