Junior\u00a0Maih\u00a0is special Adviser at Norges Bank and associate professor of economics at the Norwegian Business school. He previously worked for the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He is a member of the Dynare development team. He travels all over the world to advertise the new computational toolbox, RISE, that he developed, which solves and estimates regime switching DSGE models. The first part of the course will start out challenging the widespread view that the world is constant or more specifically that the economy is always in a single regime. Various motivating examples will be provided to support the alternative view that the world is not constant and that it is switching.<\/p>\n

Then we will see how the literature has dealt with this instability of the data. It will be shown that the assumptions made about the workings of the economic system will have critical implications for the conclusions derived from our structural (DSGE) models.<\/p>\n

After this the participants will learn about a general tool for the practical modeling of time variation. This approach encompasses the constant-parameter model as a special case.<\/p>\n

Allowing for time variation solves many issues arising in the constant parameter model but comes at a cost: solving this type of model is massively difficult. The good news is that there is a toolbox (RISE), which implements these ideas in a way that is accessible to people with little background in computations.<\/p>\n

After briefly presenting the RISE toolbox then, the first part of the course will conclude by showing examples of the type of problems that have been solved using this novel approach.<\/p>\n

The second part of course will be mostly computational. In this part of the lecture we will see live how to use the RISE toolbox and how to solve important economic problems in a regime-switching context. These examples will include among others, various forms of scenario simulations and occasionally-binding constraints problems.<\/p>\n
