If some market participants break market rules, market efficiency<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

deteriorates. Conducting laboratory experiments, we examine the<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

effects of public announcements and fines on violators\u2019 behavior. Two<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

types of announcements are examined in our paper: announcements of<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

violators\u2019 names and announcements of their IDs. Although several<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

types of remedial measures against market violations have been<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

implemented everywhere, the extent to which announcements suppress<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

violations is not clear. Our findings are fourfold. First, even when<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

the amount of fine is small, fines are the most useful punishment in<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

increasing market compliance. This finding may reflect a social norm<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

involved with paying a fine. Second, publicly announcing the names and<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

IDs of violators is helpful in suppressing violations. Market<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

compliance can be ensured by not only monetary interventions, such as<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

fines, but also by information disclosure, such as via public<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

announcements. Third, it is important for authorities to understand<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

the content that is publicly announced. Fourth, when implementing the<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

public announcement of violators\u2019 names, market transaction volumes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

and prices decrease and increase, respectively. This finding implies<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

that the announcement of names may have an influence on market<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

welfare.<\/span><\/span>\u3002<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
