This study uses Sanae Takaichi\u2019s rise as a case to discuss the difference between descriptive representation, who holds political office, and substantive representation, whether the interests of a group are actually reflected in policy. This article notes that gender equality has not been a central part of Takaichi\u2019s political agenda and that she has taken conservative positions on issues such as imperial succession, separate surnames for married couples, and same-sex marriage. Although she appointed Japan\u2019s first female finance minister, only two of 18 cabinet members were women. The study also points out that, despite an increase in the share of women in the Diet, newly elected lawmakers have taken more conservative positions on several gender issues. The study then discuss Takaichi\u2019s strong personal popularity, especially among younger voters, and suggest that some voters may value what she symbolizes even when they do not fully share her policy views. They argue that this symbolic satisfaction may reduce pressure for further gender-related reforms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chai, P., &amp; Crabtree, C.
