Could parents make up for this by leaving money to their children when they die? This study builds an economic model of a world where automation keeps advancing and asks whether such inheritances can rescue growth. It looks at four different reasons parents pass money down: pure love for their children, the simple joy of giving, unplanned leftovers from people who die before retirement, and a kind of exchange in\u3000which children are paid back for caring for their aging parents. The results show that when overall economic productivity is sufficiently high, three of these four types\u2014love, the joy of giving, and unplanned leftovers\u2014can sustain growth even as robots push wages down. But the fourth type, payment for care, does not work, no matter how productive the economy becomes, because that money is really just repayment for a service, not a true gift.
