\n<\/strong>Imagine researchers asking people all over the world the exact same question: “Are you politically left or right, on a scale from 0 to 10?” It sounds like a fair way to compare countries. But do “left” and “right” actually mean the same thing in Tokyo, Taipei, and London? And do the issues that divide voters differ?
\nThis study surveyed voters in seven places, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the UK, and the US, before and after their 2024 elections. Ideology was measured in two ways: the labels people use for themselves, and their positions on policy issues. Everyone was asked the standard cross-national questions (left\/right and government spending), but also local versions, using labels and issues that experts in each country said truly mattered there. For example, in Japan, people were asked whether they saw themselves as “conservative” or “liberal,” and about topics like the US\u2013Japan alliance; in Taiwan, the key labels were “immediate unification” versus “immediate independence.”
\nThe results showed that, compared with a one-size-fits-all scale, tailored, locally relevant questions yielded more consistent responses over time, aligned better with people’s issue positions, were better understood by respondents, and predicted actual voting behavior more accurately. Interestingly, the standard measures produced a familiar finding, that people with extreme views tend to value democratic procedures less, but local measures of issue positions showed the opposite pattern in six of the seven countries. Borrowing the same yardstick everywhere, it turns out, may quietly distort what we think we are measuring, and even the conclusions we draw.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
