Using a survey experiment with 5,400 Japanese voters, this study examines how voting rules influence support for female candidates. Participants were randomly assigned to select either one or three candidates in hypothetical local elections. The results show that when voters can select multiple candidates, they tend to balance their choices between men and women, particularly in their later selections. However, male candidates are more likely to be chosen first, and women receive less support overall under the multiple-vote system. These findings suggest that while allowing multiple votes can encourage gender-balanced voting, it does not necessarily increase women&#8217;s political representation.
