This period, the so called ‘Age of Liberty’ (1712/19-1772) was a period when Sweden in many ways tried to regain its former political influence and glory. But as resources were limited for military expansion other ways had to be used to rebuild the greatness of the Swedish empire. Religion, politics and science were all aiming to reach this goal. Scientifically the task became to understand the resources of Sweden and how these could help Sweden to greatness.
The economy was one of the foundations for the project of rebuilding the Swedish empire. And economy was much about finding the hidden resources of the country. As such the task became not only to find new ways to increase productivity and the population but also to understand what resources the country harbored. Many shared the view that God had endeavored the country with richness and that the minds of men should find the key to unlock these resources.
One of the main pillars for greatness was the population. An often-simplified way to discuss the importance of the population is to view a nation’s strength through the number of inhabitants. But that simplified way means missing out on the core of the political arithmetic, i.e. to organize the population for productive means. And that such knowledge would in turn help increase the population. In this vein, Professor oeconomia at Uppsala University Anders Berch (1711-1774) argued that to make the country prosper detailed knowledge of the population was needed. In his main work Sätt, at igenom Politisk Arithmetica utröna Länders och Rikens Hushåldning (Stockholm, 1746) [A Method for Investigating the Economy of Countries and Realms through Political Arithmetic] he stated that deep knowledge about the population was essential: “on the number of people and inhabitants, their annual increase or decrease, how many are married or unmarried, their age, the proportion of both sexes to each other, what diseases are prevalent, what kinds of diseases cause the greatest loss of life, how long the shortage of population can be replaced”.
The establishment of the Royal Academy of Sciences in June 1739 was a milestone in this endeavor. Science was then seen to promote greatness and so was a tool aiming to understand a) existing resources and b) how to exploit their economic potential to regain national strength. Many members of the Academy contributed to this task, as of course Carl von Linné’s work (1707-1778), who was one of the founders of this society and his travels over Sweden all aimed to make inventories of and to understand how existing resources could be used for the benefit and greatness of the country. It was also in accordance with this vision of inventorying the country’s resources that Jacob Faggot (1699-1777), who was elected as member no 17 the same month as the academy was founded, presented in 1741 a memorandum to the Academy entitled “Thoughts on the knowledge and description of the motherland,” in which he emphasized the need to describe the motherland and its resources in order to compile a comprehensive and well-documented inventory of the country’s resources. In the same vein, at the initiative of members of the Academy of Sciences, the first modern European census was conducted.
This presentation aims at presenting how the quest for detailed knowledge of the population led Swedish scientists, politicians, and industrialists to establish and develop the first european state body for the collection and compilation of population statistics, Tabellverket in 1749, which was later transformed into a permanent state commission, Tabellkommissionen in 1756.

講演者 氏名：Nathalie Le Bouteillec 所属：ピカルディ・ジュール・ヴェルヌ大学／CURAPP-ESS／フランス国立人口学研究所 資格：Professor 開催概要 開催日時：　2026年10月20日 […]

[103,1
99,102,18,101
post-12398","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news-en","category-news","tag-events-en","tag-general-en","tag-events","tag-general
["GET
